The safety of herbs

While generally herbal remedies are touted as safe when compared to conventional medication, there are instances when herbs can cross the line and become dangerous. There are a number of herbs that should not be used during pregnancy or when you are breastfeeding for example. The problem also lies in the fact that as most herbs have not been tested, their strengths and formulations may differ from product to product. There is no regulation on the manufacturing processes and no way to check the prescribed amounts and concentrations. If there are more regulations in this field as well as governmental control, herbal remedies have the potential of much more growth. The whole issue of herbs being outside the scope of regulation is what perhaps keeps it from growing in mainstream medicine.

Do remember that if you have a serious ailment, do not take herbs unless you check with your physician or go to a registered, trained and well-known herbal practitioner. In the case of ailments that are classified as life-threatening, this line of treatment should not be resorted to in case of complications.

The question of herbs

Should you? Or shouldn’t you? This is something that most people do wonder about. On the one side, herbs have been administered for years and there have been many cures through the ages. On the other, there have been instances when herbs have proved harmful. The rule of thumb to safely follow would probably be to take them when the ailments are minor. Do remember however not to take more than what is prescribed in case you develop complications. It would be a shame if you treated yourself only to discover that the ailment was worse than you thought, which could mean that a lot of time was wasted before diagnosis.

The availability of herbs

How are herbs available today? Well, you can get them in many forms – in capsules and pills, powders, as creams or ointments too. You find them just about everywhere today – pharmacies, health stores or even in supermarkets. Do go see a trained herbal practitioner if possible. Though it is not a regulated profession, they do go through 3, maybe 5 years of study before they become members of the NIMH or National Institute of Medical Herbalists so they do know how safe and suitable the herbs they prescribe are. In case you have any doubts, talk to your physician as well. Today, more and more physicians are open to look at alternative treatments alongside their own line of treatment as well.

Beyond herbal medicine

There’s more to alternative treatment than just herbs. Though many traditional medicine like Ayurveda and Chinese medicines use herbs, they also use other forms of healing. Ayurveda for example, focuses a lot on yoga and breathing together with massage and diet to let the energy or ‘prana’ back into the body.

Beauty crime: going to sleep still wearing a full face of makeup.

The scent of original Nivea Creme is so very nostalgic for me. I remember winter vacations in Vermont with my family when, before going out skiing (or sledding, for me...I was a little bitty kid), my mother would slather Nivea on my face. I loved the way it felt and the way it smelled...and I never got windburn, dryness, or chapped skin.

I've recently rediscovered Nivea and have fallen in love with it all over again. It is quite thick, so I find that it's best to use as a night cream - I put a little on before bed and when I wake up, my skin feels phenomenal. It also works wonders on hands, feet, cuticles, knees and elbows.

Now here's where things get a little contentious. I've heard some complaints from users of Nivea (and its luxury cousin, La Mer) that the creme just "sits on top of their skin." This is not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you're using it at night.


According to The Beauty Brains, the best moisturizers form a barrier layer on top of the skin, preventing water loss (read their great post here). The ingredients that do this best are petroleum jelly, lanolin, mineral oil, dimethicone, and coconut oil. Nivea contains petrolatum, mineral oil, and lanolin alcohol. You do the math. It works. It's just not formulated to be "light" and "fast-absorbing." And honestly, with December already around the corner, that's probably not what you want (or need) anyway.

These ingredients may make the Creme too rich for daytime use (except for winter sports and spot treatments), but it's one of the most effective night creams I've ever used. I won't go without it during the winter months!

 

Bye-Bye Blemish

Red meat link to breast cancer ?

Burgers, bacon, hot dogs, bologna - their effect have taken another hit. Researcher are now reporting that younger woman who indulge a taste of red meat may their chances of getting a common type of breast cancer.

The connection between eating red meat and breast cancer has been studied before, with no clear conclusions. This study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, zeroed in on premenopausal woman between the ages of 26 and 46 and looked not just at overall rates of breast cancer but at the incidence of different types of the disease.

About 60% of breast cancers are fuelled by the hormones oestrogen and progesterone; the thought is that certain components of red meat, including compounds that develop when is cooking and hormones fed to the animal to spur growth, could encourage the development of that kind of cancer.

Researchers analysed the diets and health records of more than 90 000 women over a period of 12 years. About 1000 cases ofbreast cancer developed. Of those, the women who deveoped cancers sensitive to oestrogen and progesterone (about half of all cases in study) had a histry of eating more red meat than either women who didn't get cancer at all or those who had cancers not fuelled by the hormones.

The extra risk range from 14% more for those who ate between three and five servings per week up to nearly double for who ate more than 1.5 servings a day. Red meat included beef, lamb or pork even as a main dish in sandwiches, and in processed form.

The study does not difinitively prove cause and effect. But given that red meat has also been implicated in other forms of cancer and heart disease.

1 Behaving like he's a mind reader - or dropping "clues" about what you want

This is a very feminine game, but it won't get you what you want.
